About this piece
Painted in strict profile against a field of deep red, the sitter wears a gold headwrap worked in leaf and stitch-like mark-making, a small sun rising behind her. Doljenkova builds the face in layered earth tones and then draws back into it with fine dark line, giving the features the incised quality of relief carving. Nothing in the composition moves; everything is held. The most formal portrait in the collection, and the most regal.
