About this piece

A stand of birches breaks the horizon in wet ochre and umber, then repeats itself upside down in still water, the two halves meeting in a band of pale nothing. Doljenkova works almost entirely wet-into-wet, letting the pigment find its own edges, and resists the urge to sharpen anything back up once it has dried. What is left is less a place than the memory of one. Restrained, atmospheric, and confident enough to leave most of the sheet empty.
