About this piece
Four women walk a warm, dusty landscape with bundles and vessels carried level on their heads, and Doljenkova gives each a different weight and stride so the group reads as individuals rather than as a motif. The ground is collage — torn maps, patterned scraps, washes of rust and gold — which lets the land feel assembled from memory rather than observed from life. Their skirts carry the brightest pigment on the sheet. A painting about labour that refuses to make labour look grim.
